Dominica is the Caribbean's adventure island. The interior is two-thirds rainforest, the coastline drops straight into deep water, and there are working hot springs and volcanic vents at almost every elevation. Most of the island's best activities are in nature, and most are unique enough that you wouldn't get a comparable version of them anywhere else in the region.

Hiking

The signature activity. Dominica has the longest signposted long-distance trail in the Caribbean (the Waitukubuli National Trail, 184 km), one of the region's most dramatic day-hikes (the Boiling Lake), and dozens of shorter walks to waterfalls, crater lakes, and coastal viewpoints.

Most travellers fly here specifically to hike. If you're one of them, the hiking hub covers every named trail, ranks them by difficulty, and tells you what to pick.

If you've never hiked in tropical rainforest before, expect wet roots, slippery basalt, and steeper trails than guidebook descriptions suggest. Bring proper grippy footwear and don't underestimate the cumulative ascent.

Scuba diving and snorkelling

Dominica has some of the most undervalued diving in the Caribbean. Volcanic walls drop straight into deep water from the leeward shore, the Soufriere–Scotts Head Marine Reserve protects an underwater caldera in the south, and Champagne Reef has thermal vents that release bubbles up through warm water against a healthy reef.

Most dive shops are based in Roseau, Castle Comfort and Soufriere. A typical two-tank day dive runs around US$110 to $140 with gear. Visibility is best in the dry season (October to April) when surface conditions are calmest.

Whale and dolphin watching

Sperm whales are resident year-round off Dominica's leeward coast. One of the few places in the world this is true. Most boat trips also encounter spinner dolphins, pilot whales and false killer whales depending on the season.

Tours leave from Roseau and Castle Comfort, run roughly 3.5 hours, and have a strong sighting rate. Best season is November to March when seas are calmest. See whale watching in Dominica.

Hot springs and spas

The same volcanic system that makes the Boiling Lake boil also feeds a network of natural hot springs across the island. The headline area is Wotten Waven, in the Roseau Valley, where several small operators have built rustic open-air pools at varying temperatures. The other notable area is Bamboozay Sulphur Baths in the south, near Soufriere village.

Most pools are open afternoon and evening. Expect to pay US$5 to $15 for entry. They pair naturally with a hike earlier in the day. See hot springs and spas.

Canyoning

Dominica's deep gorges, narrow river canyons and tropical rainfall make it one of the better canyoning destinations in the Caribbean. Most trips combine rappels, jumps, slides and short swims through slot canyons in the Roseau Valley and Morne Trois Pitons area.

Operators run trips for first-timers (no prior experience needed) up to multi-pitch days for the more adventurous. Half-day tours typically run US$120 to $180. See canyoning.

Kayaking and paddleboarding

Quieter than the headline activities and a good rest-day option. The west coast has several calm bays well suited to flatwater kayaking and SUP, with Mero Beach, Castle Comfort and Soufriere Bay among the easiest launches. The Indian River on the north coast is the classic guided paddle, taken in flat-bottomed boats through brackish mangrove channels.

Bird watching

Dominica is home to two endemic parrots: the imperial parrot (Sisserou) and the red-necked parrot (Jaco), both of which are easier to spot here than anywhere else on Earth (because they don't live anywhere else). The Sisserou is the national bird and appears on the flag.

Sea turtle conservation

Leatherback, green and hawksbill turtles all nest on Dominica's beaches. The main nesting beaches are on the east coast, particularly Rosalie Bay, where the local conservation programme runs guided night-time turtle watches in season (March to October peak).

Horse riding and sport fishing

Smaller categories but worth a mention.

Horse riding is mostly available on the west coast, with stables near Roseau and the south running guided beach and forest rides for one to two hours. See horse riding.

One day on a cruise

A week

Add a north-coast day (Cabrits, Indian River, Calibishie), one full day of just diving, and either an east-coast day in the Kalinago Territory or a longer Waitukubuli section.

Two weeks

Enough time to thru-hike a meaningful chunk of the Waitukubuli National Trail, spend several days diving, and still see all the headline landmarks.

Best time of year for activities

Most things on this list run year-round, but there are seasonal differences worth knowing.

Hiking: dry season (December to April) is easier and safer. Wet season trails are slipperier and some hikes close after heavy rain.
Diving and snorkelling: October to April for best visibility and calmest seas.
Whale watching: sperm whales are resident year-round, but November to March has the calmest sea conditions and most consistent tour schedules.
Sea turtle nesting: March to October peak, with viewing tours typically running April to July.
Bird watching: good year-round; early morning is best regardless of season.
Canyoning: rivers run higher in the wet season, which makes some routes harder. Dry season is the easier window.
