How to Get to Dominica:
Flights, Ferries & Connections

There are no direct flights to Dominica from North America or Europe. You connect through one of the regional hubs (San Juan, Antigua, Barbados or Miami), and the connection adds half a day to most routings. Cruise passengers and ferry travellers from neighbouring French islands have it easier. This page covers all the practical options.

Flying to Dominica

Dominica's main airport is Douglas-Charles Airport (DOM), formerly Melville Hall, on the north-east (Atlantic) coast. The drive from DOM to Roseau is about 1 hour through the central highlands on a winding mountain road. There is no airport in Roseau itself.

A second much smaller airfield, Canefield Airport (DCF), sits five minutes from Roseau and handles only short regional flights from neighbouring islands. It does not take international widebody traffic.

From the US

There are no direct flights from any US city to Dominica. The two routinely-used connecting routes are:

  • Via San Juan, Puerto Rico (SJU). The most common path. American Airlines, JetBlue and others run frequent flights to San Juan from Miami, JFK, Boston, Atlanta and others. Onward connection to DOM on either InterCaribbean Airways, Silver Airways or Seaborne runs roughly 60 to 90 minutes.
  • Via Miami (MIA). American Airlines occasionally runs direct Miami-DOM service. When they do, it's the easiest US routing. Schedules vary seasonally.
  • Via Antigua (ANU) or Barbados (BGI). Possible but typically requires more layover time. Fine if your routing already goes through one of these hubs.

Plan for at least a 2.5-hour connection on the US side. The DOM-bound regional flights are small (50-passenger turboprops) and weight-restricted, so they don't wait for delayed inbound flights.

From the UK and Europe

Two practical paths:

  • Via Antigua (ANU). British Airways runs direct LGW-ANU service. Connect onward to DOM on LIAT or InterCaribbean (45 minutes flight, 1 to 3 hour layover typical).
  • Via Paris (CDG) and Martinique (FDF). Air France runs direct CDG-FDF service. From Martinique, take the Express des Îles ferry to Dominica (1.5 hours) or fly the short hop on a regional carrier.
  • Via Miami or San Juan. Same routings as US travellers. Adds a US transit so you'll need ESTA or US transit visa as relevant.

Total journey time from London is typically 12 to 16 hours including connection. The Air France/ferry combination is sometimes the most pleasant in good weather.

From the Caribbean

Inter-island carriers connect Dominica with most regional hubs:

  • InterCaribbean Airways runs direct service from San Juan, Antigua, Barbados, St Maarten, and several others.
  • LIAT (or its current successor, LIAT 2020) runs the historical regional network.
  • Air Antilles connects Dominica with Guadeloupe and Martinique via short hops.
  • Winair and Silver Airways appear seasonally.

Regional fares are not cheap relative to the distances involved. Budget US$200 to $500 for a one-way regional connection.

Arriving by ferry

The Express des Îles ferry connects Dominica with Guadeloupe (north) and Martinique (south), with onward connections to St Lucia. The Roseau Ferry Terminal is on the Bay Front, a short walk from the cruise port.

Typical schedule:

  • Pointe-à-Pitre (Guadeloupe) to Roseau: ~2.5 hours, several departures per week.
  • Fort-de-France (Martinique) to Roseau: ~1.5 hours, several departures per week.
  • St Lucia to Roseau: longer, less frequent.

Schedules vary seasonally and Sunday/holiday service is reduced. Check the Express des Îles website close to your travel date.

Fares are usually cheaper than equivalent flights, especially if you book in advance. The ride can be rough on rough-sea days. Bring motion sickness medication if you're prone.

The ferry is the obvious choice if you're combining Dominica with Martinique, Guadeloupe or St Lucia in a multi-island trip.

Arriving by cruise

Most major Caribbean cruise lines include Dominica as a stop. Ships dock at the Roseau Cruise Ship Berth on the Bay Front (downtown), or, when that's full, at Woodbridge Bay about 1 km north. Both put you within minutes of central Roseau.

Cruise passengers don't need any visa for Dominica beyond the cruise line's standard ID checks. You're not technically clearing immigration. Practical advice on what to do with the day is in the dedicated cruise port guide.

Airport transfers and arrival logistics

From Douglas-Charles to your accommodation

The drive from DOM to Roseau is about 1 hour through the central highlands. Options:

  • Hotel transfer. Most accommodation will arrange a pickup, US$50 to $80 one way for the Roseau area. Easiest for first-time visitors.
  • Taxi. Available outside the terminal. Roughly the same cost.
  • Rental car. Several agencies have desks at DOM (Avis, Budget, local operators). You'll need a Dominican Driver's Permit (issued at the airport on arrival, US$12) on top of your home country licence.
  • Shared minibus. Cheap (a few US$) but slow and not recommended after a long-haul flight. Service is irregular and stops at every village.

If you're staying in Portsmouth or the north coast, the drive from DOM is shorter (45 minutes). If you're staying in the south (Soufriere, Scotts Head), allow 1.5 to 2 hours. Confirm transfer arrangements before you arrive.

Customs and immigration

On-arrival processing at DOM is normally quick. Have ready:

  • Your passport.
  • A printed or digital copy of your accommodation booking.
  • Your return or onward ticket.
  • The completed customs declaration (sometimes filled out online ahead of time, sometimes on paper on arrival depending on current procedure).

For visa-free nationals (US, UK, EU, Canada, Australia, NZ and most Caribbean), you'll be stamped in for up to 90 days. For longer stays or other nationalities, see visa and entry requirements.

Saving money on flights

A few strategies that consistently work:

  • Book the long-haul leg and the regional leg separately. You can often find a cheaper cross-Atlantic ticket to San Juan or Antigua than the through-ticket to Dominica, and InterCaribbean's San Juan-DOM fares are reasonable booked direct.
  • Watch for sales. InterCaribbean and the local carriers run promotions, especially around Dive Fest (July) and shoulder months (May, September, November).
  • Avoid the Christmas/New Year window. The 24 December to 2 January period is the most expensive time to fly to Dominica thanks to diaspora travel.
  • Consider the Air France routing through Paris and Martinique. For UK/EU travellers, the Paris-Martinique-Roseau ferry path is sometimes meaningfully cheaper than the BA Antigua route.
