Getting Around Dominica:
Cars, Buses, Taxis & Tips
Last updated:
Dominica is small (47 km long) and the road network is simple, but the geography is not. Mountains, gorges and frequent rain make driving slower than the distances suggest. A trip from Roseau to Portsmouth that looks like 40 km on the map takes about 1 hour. Trips into the interior on unpaved or partially-paved roads take longer still.
You have three practical ways to get around: rental car, pre-arranged drivers and tour vans, or shared minibuses. Pick by what your trip looks like.
At a glance
| Option | Daily cost | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rental car | US$50 to $80 | Independent travellers, multiple stops per day, trailheads, remote beaches | You drive winding mountain roads on the left |
| Pre-arranged driver/tour van | US$80 to $150 | First-time visitors, multiple sites, no driving stress | Less flexible, more expensive |
| Shared minibus | US$2 to $5 per ride | Town-to-town movement, budget travel | Slow, no door-to-door, no use for trailheads |
| Taxi (one-off) | US$20 to $80 | Airport transfer, single trips | Adds up if you use multiple per day |
Rental cars
The most flexible option and the one most return visitors choose. Rates run US$50 to $80 per day for a small SUV or 4x4. A 4x4 is not strictly necessary but useful for unpaved trailhead roads on the east side and to the more remote beaches.
Where to rent
- At Douglas-Charles Airport (DOM). Several agencies have desks (Avis, Budget, plus local operators). Easiest for arrival.
- In Roseau. Pickup and drop-off in town if you'd rather not drive from the airport.
- In Portsmouth. Smaller selection but works if you're staying north.
Local operators (Valley Rent-A-Car, Best Deal Car Rental, others) are typically cheaper than the international chains and run smaller fleets. They are reliable but be flexible on exact car model.
Driver's Permit
Visitors need a Dominica Driver's Permit in addition to their home country licence. This is a tourist permit issued on arrival, costs US$12, and is valid for one month. The rental agency will issue it at pickup. Bring your passport.
Driving rules and conditions
- Drive on the left. Same as the UK and most former British colonies.
- Speed limits are 32 km/h (20 mph) in towns and 64 km/h (40 mph) on the open road. The roads themselves rarely allow you to drive faster than that even where the limit would.
- Roads are narrow. Two cars passing on a coastal road frequently means one pulls onto the shoulder. Expect this.
- Mountain switchbacks are tight and frequent. Use lower gears on descents.
- Rain washes out unpaved sections quickly. Check the forecast before driving east-coast or interior roads.
- Petrol stations are clustered around Roseau and Portsmouth. Top up before driving the east coast or south.
- Parking is generally free at trailheads, hot springs and beaches. Lock the car. Don't leave valuables visible.
Insurance
Most rental agreements include basic third-party cover. CDW (collision damage waiver) is typically extra. Your home country credit card may include rental coverage; check before declining the agency's CDW. Excess on damage claims is high (US$1,000+) so good cover is worth having.
Pre-arranged drivers and tour vans
The default for many visitors and the easiest option for first-time travellers who don't want to drive on the left in mountainous conditions. Drivers know every trailhead, hot spring and unmarked viewpoint, and they handle logistics like Site Pass purchases.
How it works
You arrange a driver for the day (or several days), agree a rate and an itinerary, and they pick you up from your accommodation. Most drivers also act as informal guides, pointing things out and making suggestions. For specialist hikes (Boiling Lake) you'll want a licensed guide on top of the driver.
Rates
- Half day in the central area (e.g. Trafalgar Falls plus Wotten Waven): US$60 to $100.
- Full day in central Dominica (Trafalgar plus Titou Gorge plus Emerald Pool plus Boeri Lake stop): US$100 to $150.
- Full day to the north or east coast (Cabrits, Indian River, Kalinago Territory): US$130 to $180.
- Cross-island day with multiple stops: US$150 to $200.
- Multi-day rate: typically a 10 to 20% discount on per-day pricing.
Rates vary by group size; a private driver for two costs the same as for four. Tipping is appreciated, 10 to 15% if the driver did well.
Finding a driver
Most accommodation will recommend (or directly arrange) a driver. The Roseau and Portsmouth taxi/tour driver associations also publish lists, and the Discover Dominica Authority (the national tourism board) maintains a list of licensed operators. Booking ahead for cruise days is strongly recommended.
Shared minibuses
Cheap, frequent on the main routes, and the way most Dominicans get around. Vehicles are 8 to 14-seat minivans with the route number painted on the side, leaving from designated bus stops in each town.
Where they run
- Roseau to Portsmouth along the west coast: frequent, every 10 to 30 minutes during the day.
- Roseau to Soufriere/Scotts Head: less frequent, every 30 to 60 minutes.
- Roseau to the Roseau Valley (Trafalgar, Wotten Waven): regular daytime service.
- Roseau to the east coast (Castle Bruce, Marigot, Kalinago Territory): less frequent, allow extra time.
- Cross-island routes: limited.
Costs
Fares are set per route by the government. Roughly:
- Within Roseau: EC$2 (US$0.75)
- Roseau to Roseau Valley: EC$3 to $5
- Roseau to Soufriere: EC$8 to $10 (US$3 to $4)
- Roseau to Portsmouth: EC$10 to $12 (US$4)
Pay the driver in cash on board, in EC$ or US$.
Practical notes
- Sundays and holidays have very reduced service.
- No fixed schedule. Buses leave when full, which means waiting up to 30 minutes at off-peak times.
- No bus stops at trailheads. Buses run between towns. You'll often have to walk the last 20 to 60 minutes from the road to a hike or hot spring.
- Limited evening service. After dark, options thin out fast. Plan to be back in town before sunset or arrange a taxi return.
Minibuses work well for moving between Roseau and Portsmouth or for occasional rides into the Roseau Valley. They don't work well as a primary transport mode for a hiking-heavy trip.
Taxis
Standard taxis are available outside major hotels, the airport, and the cruise port. They are not metered. Agree the fare before you set off. Common fixed routes:
- Airport (DOM) to Roseau: US$50 to $80.
- Airport (DOM) to Portsmouth: US$30 to $50.
- Roseau to Trafalgar Falls (one-way): US$25 to $35.
- Roseau to Wotten Waven: US$25 to $35.
- Cruise port to Trafalgar (round trip with wait): US$60 to $100.
Taxis are useful for one-off trips, especially when you don't want to drive yourself, but using them for an entire day is more expensive than just hiring a driver.
Picking the right option for your trip
- Cruise day, 6 to 9 hours in port. Pre-arranged tour van or hotel-arranged driver. Don't try to manage minibus schedules on a tight ship clock.
- Long weekend (3 to 4 days), one base. Pre-arranged driver works well. Rental car works if you're comfortable driving on the left.
- A week or more, multiple bases. Rental car. The flexibility pays back.
- Diving-focused trip with a single dive operator. Most dive operations include or arrange transport from Roseau-area accommodation. You may not need to rent at all.
- Hiking-focused trip. Rental car or driver. Minibuses and taxis are too inefficient for daily trailhead access.
- Budget trip. Minibuses for inter-town transport plus the occasional taxi for trailheads.
Getting Around Dominica – FAQ
Is it safe to drive in Dominica?
Yes, with normal caution. The roads are narrow, mountainous and often wet, so drive slower than you would at home. Most accidents involve over-confident driving on coastal switchbacks. Drive on the left.
Do you need a 4x4 in Dominica?
Not strictly. A standard small SUV with decent ground clearance handles 95% of routes. A 4x4 is useful for the unpaved roads to east-coast falls, some Calibishie-area beaches, and after heavy rain.
How much does a rental car cost in Dominica?
US$50 to $80 per day for a compact SUV from a local operator. International chains run higher. Add the US$12 Dominica Driver's Permit, fuel (around EC$15 to $18 per gallon), and optional CDW.
Can you use Uber in Dominica?
No. Uber doesn't operate in Dominica. The taxi/tour driver associations and your accommodation are the equivalents.
What's the best way to get from Roseau to Portsmouth?
Shared minibus if you're price-sensitive (US$4, ~1 hour). Pre-arranged driver if you want to combine with stops along the way (US$80 to $130 round trip with sightseeing). Rental car if you'll be exploring the north for a couple of days.
How long does it take to drive across Dominica?
Roseau to Portsmouth (north-south on west coast): ~1 hour. Roseau to Douglas-Charles Airport (cross-island): ~1 hour. Roseau to Calibishie (north-east): ~1.5 hours. Roseau to Castle Bruce / Kalinago (east): ~1.5 hours.
