Kayaking & Paddleboarding in Dominica:
Where to Paddle
Last updated:
Dominica isn't a major flatwater paddling destination compared to Caribbean islands with extensive lagoons and sheltered bays, but the leeward (west) coast has several calm spots that work well for kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding. Most travellers paddle as a rest-day activity, an alternative to a hike or dive, or as part of a guided tour up the protected Indian River.

Where to paddle
Mero Beach
The closest swimmable beach to Roseau, on the west coast. Calm water, easy entry, and several beach kiosks renting kayaks and SUPs by the hour. Beginner-friendly. A morning paddle here is a relaxed alternative to a beach lounging day. See Mero Beach.
Castle Comfort and Soufriere Bay
Sheltered bays just south of Roseau. Calm in the morning, with views back toward the Soufriere–Scotts Head Marine Reserve. Good for longer paddles along the coastline.
Scotts Head peninsula
The narrow peninsula at the very southern tip of the island. More exposed conditions than the inner bays, but on calm days the paddle around the peninsula gives you the best views in Dominica from the water. Book with a guide if you're not confident.
Toucari Bay (north coast)
Quiet, calm, and rarely paddled. Best for travellers staying in Portsmouth or Calibishie who want a relaxed morning on the water.
Note: the Indian River is not for kayakers
The protected Indian River does not allow private craft, including kayaks. The only way to travel up the river is in a registered rowed wooden boat. Don't book or attempt a kayak trip on the Indian River.
Tour options
Several Roseau and Castle Comfort operators run guided kayak tours along the leeward coast, typically combining paddling with a snorkel stop. Half-day tours run US$50 to $80 per person, including gear and a guide. Best for travellers who don't want to handle logistics themselves.
Conditions
The leeward (west) coast of Dominica is sheltered from the Atlantic tradewinds and stays generally calm through most of the year. Best windows:
- Early morning (6 to 10 AM) is the calmest, before tradewinds build.
- Late afternoon is sometimes calm again as winds drop, depending on the day.
- Mid-day to afternoon can be choppy with onshore winds.
In the wet season (June to October), heavy rain can muddy bay water for a few days at a time. Tropical storm activity occasionally interrupts paddling for several days.
Equipment and rentals
Most operators provide:
- Sit-on-top kayaks (most common; easier for beginners)
- Stand-up paddleboards (more popular at Mero)
- Paddles and PFDs
- Dry bag for valuables
Bring your own:
- Reef-safe sunscreen
- Hat
- Water bottle
- Quick-dry top or rash vest
- Underwater camera if you have one
What you'll see
- Sea fans, schools of small reef fish, and the occasional ray in clear-water bays.
- Coastal forest and small fishing villages along the shoreline.
- Sea turtles occasionally surfacing.
- The Soufriere–Scotts Head crater rim from a unique angle if you're paddling that area.
Pair with
- Morning paddle, afternoon snorkel at Champagne Reef or Bubbles Beach.
- Paddle plus beach day at Mero Beach.
- A south-coast day: paddle Soufriere Bay, then Bamboozay Sulphur Baths.
