Titou Gorge, Dominica:
Swim Through a Slot Canyon

Must See

Swim into a narrow basalt slot canyon. The walls close in. The water is cold. The waterfall at the far end makes it worth every stroke.

Titou Gorge is a narrow basalt slot canyon a few minutes' drive past the village of Laudat, fed by a small river that has carved its way through the rock for millennia. You enter the gorge by swimming. The walls close in overhead and the channel snakes back into a series of small waterfalls that you can swim up to. It's one of the most distinctive swims on the island and the reason a lot of return visitors put it near the top of their list.

It's also the trailhead for the Boiling Lake hike, which means many travellers see Titou Gorge as a quick swim before or after that hike rather than as a destination in itself. It rewards being treated as a destination.

What it's actually like

The gorge starts as a calm pool of clear cold water at the edge of a small clearing. The walls rise on either side as soon as you start swimming in: dark wet basalt, mossy at the waterline, with a strip of sky visible above. The further in you go, the narrower and darker it gets. After 30 to 50 m you reach the first waterfall, a 2 to 3 m drop with a strong flow.

Beyond the first waterfall the gorge continues to a second waterfall, taller and harder to reach because of the current. Most casual swimmers stop at the first. People who push through to the second usually have a guide and good upper-body strength.

"One of my favourite places in Dominica. If you enter the gorge near the start of the Boiling Lake hike you can swim through the gorge and up to two waterfalls inside. I've only ever made it past the first one because of the power of the water flowing through. You can hire a life jacket from the local guy that's there. Not expensive."

Drew

The water is genuinely cold. Even on a hot day you'll feel it. The cold plus the closed-in walls plus the rushing water at the back is part of what makes the experience.

Doing it as a casual swim

The simplest version: drive up, pay the small entry fee, jump in, swim back to the first waterfall, swim back, dry off, leave. About an hour at the gorge.

Practical notes:

  • A life jacket is recommended for anyone who isn't a confident swimmer. The current near the waterfalls is stronger than it looks. Rentals are available at the entrance for a few US$.
  • Don't try to climb up the waterfall. People do, occasionally fall, and the basalt is slick.
  • Bring a dry bag if you want to take photos. Phones don't survive otherwise.
  • Wear footwear. Reef shoes or hike sandals with straps. Bare feet on basalt is a slip risk.

The gorge is small. With more than 15 to 20 people inside at once it starts to feel crowded. Mornings are quieter than afternoons.

Doing it as full canyoning

For travellers who want the gorge plus more, Extreme Dominica runs guided canyoning trips that include Titou Gorge as part of a multi-feature route. These involve abseiling down waterfalls, jumping into pools, swimming through additional sections of canyon, and sometimes scrambling between features.

"I went gorge walking with Extreme Dominica, which involves abseiling and jumping off waterfalls. Very cool, and if you like a bit of adrenaline it's a must."

Drew

Half-day canyoning trips run roughly US$120 to $180 per person. No prior experience is needed for the standard route. Full-day options for people with more skill are also available. See canyoning in Dominica for more.

Pairing with the Boiling Lake hike

The Boiling Lake trailhead starts from the same parking area as Titou Gorge. Many hikers swim the gorge as a brief reward at the end of the Boiling Lake hike. After eight hours on a strenuous trail, a 20-minute swim in cold gorge water is a strong finish.

It works the other way too. A swim before the hike (early morning, before you start climbing) is fine if you don't mind being slightly cold for the first hour.

Pirates of the Caribbean

The gorge appears in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (2006). The scene where the cannibal islanders chase Jack Sparrow ends with him jumping off a cliff into Titou Gorge. The film locations across Dominica are signposted at most relevant sites, and the gorge is the most visited of the lot.

Cost and access

  • Entry fee: a few US$, paid in cash at the entrance.
  • Life jacket rental: US$3 to $5.
  • Site Pass: not strictly required for the gorge swim itself, but you'll need it for the Boiling Lake trail if you continue.
  • Toilets are at the parking area.
  • No restaurant on site. Bring water. Drive back to Trafalgar village or Roseau for food.

Getting there

  • From Roseau: ~25 to 30 minutes by car, all on paved road past Laudat.
  • From the cruise port: ~30 to 35 minutes.
  • Public transport: shared minibus to Laudat village runs from Roseau, then a 15 to 20 minute walk to the gorge entrance.

What to bring

  • Swimwear under your clothes.
  • Quick-dry towel.
  • Hike sandals or reef shoes with grip.
  • Dry bag for phone or compact camera.
  • A light layer for after, the air is cooler at this elevation.

Pair with

  • A morning swim at the gorge, then the Boiling Lake hike (full day) or just the easier Trafalgar Falls (half day).
  • Titou Gorge plus a soak at Wotten Waven hot springs on the same afternoon. Cold-then-hot water sequence is a classic Dominica spa day.
  • Full canyoning trip with Extreme Dominica plus a quiet evening in the Roseau Valley.

Titou Gorge, Dominica – FAQ

Can you swim through Titou Gorge without a guide?

Yes. Most visitors swim it independently. Pay the entry fee, get in the water, swim back to the first waterfall, return.

How cold is the water at Titou Gorge?

Cold. Coming from rainforest stream sources at altitude, the water stays cool year-round and the gorge sits in deep shade. Most people last 20 to 30 minutes before they want to warm up.

Is Titou Gorge safe for children?

With supervision and a life jacket, yes, for confident young swimmers. The currents near the waterfalls are stronger than they look. Younger children should swim only at the calm entrance pool.

How is Titou Gorge different from canyoning in Dominica?

The gorge is a single short slot you swim through. Canyoning combines multiple features (abseils, jumps, swims) over several hours. Extreme Dominica runs the standard canyoning trip that includes Titou Gorge as one of its features.

Can you do Titou Gorge and the Boiling Lake on the same day?

Yes, that's the standard combination. Most hikers swim the gorge before or (more commonly) after the Boiling Lake hike. Same parking area.

Is Titou Gorge worth visiting on a cruise day?

Yes, as a short stop combined with Trafalgar Falls. 30 to 45 minutes at the gorge plus 30 minutes at Trafalgar makes a strong half-day from the cruise port.
