Portsmouth, Dominica:
The Northern Town Guide
Last updated:
Portsmouth is Dominica's second-largest town, on the north-west coast at the head of Prince Rupert Bay. The town has about 4,000 people and a meaningfully different feel from Roseau: less polished, slower-paced, more rural. For visitors, it's the gateway to the north, with Cabrits National Park, Fort Shirley, the Indian River, and the better northern beaches all within 15 minutes.
What's in Portsmouth
The waterfront
Portsmouth's waterfront runs along Prince Rupert Bay with a small ferry pier, fishing boats, beach bars and a relaxed strolling promenade. Less developed than Roseau's Bay Front, more village-like.
The town centre
A working town with shops, banks, restaurants, and the Indian River Boatmen Association office, where you book the Indian River boat trip. Saturday morning is the busiest day, with a small market.
Picard Beach
A long stretch of darker sand running south of the town centre. Calm swimming, beach bars, and small accommodation along the beach. Better for a casual swim than the headline north-coast beaches further east.
Ross University
Portsmouth is home to the Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine, which brings a small student population (mostly American) and several student-oriented restaurants and cafés to the town. The student presence has shaped Portsmouth's modest restaurant and bar scene.

Portsmouth, Dominica – FAQ
What is there to do in Portsmouth?
The big attractions are nearby rather than in the town itself: Cabrits National Park and Fort Shirley (5 min), the Indian River boat trip (5 min), and the north-coast beaches (15 to 30 min). The town is your base for these.
Is Portsmouth worth visiting?
Yes, especially if you have 5+ days in Dominica or are arriving by ferry from Guadeloupe. Most travellers spend 1 to 2 nights in the Portsmouth/Calibishie area as part of a longer trip.
How does Portsmouth compare to Roseau?
Roseau is the capital (population ~15,000) with the cruise port and most government, business and tourism services. Portsmouth is the second town (~4,000), quieter, more rural, gateway to the north coast.
Is Portsmouth safe?
Yes, similar to the rest of Dominica. Low rates of crime against tourists. Standard travel caution applies.
Is the ferry from Guadeloupe a good option?
Yes, especially if you're combining Dominica with the French Antilles. Express des Îles runs from Pointe-à-Pitre to Portsmouth (~2.5 hours, several departures per week). See getting to Dominica.
Where can I rent a car in Portsmouth?
Several local rental agencies operate in town. Selection is smaller than at the airport or in Roseau, but availability is generally good. Book ahead in peak season.
